Strategic Purchasing: The Neglected Health Financing Function for Pursuing Universal Health Coverage in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

The academic literature on strategic purchasing, together with related literature on contracting of health services, has long adopted principal-agent and transaction cost economics as its main theoretical underpinning. The recent paper by Sanderson et al2 substantially augments the traditional theoretical perspectives on strategic purchasing by adding insights from the literature on the theories of inter-organizational relationships.
